History

Delaware County, one of 67 counties in Pennsylvania, was created from part of Chester County in 1789. It was named for the Delaware River and its county seat has been Media since 1851. Prior to 1851 Chester City was the county seat of both Delaware County and, before that, of Chester County in the Delaware Valley area. Delaware County and the history-rich Brandywine countryside have thousands of visitors touring battlefields, rivers and nationally renowned museums and gardens. Historic Sugartown, a rural crossroads village dating from the late 18th century is located in Willistown Township. It was a typical crossroads village that provided goods and services required by the surrounding farm community. Most of the buildings have remained largely intact and it provides an exceptional example of a self-sufficient community of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Brandywine Battlefield Historic Site is on the grounds of the park is Washington's headquarters and Lafayette's quarters. Colonial Pennsylvania Plantation in Ridley Creek State Park is an authentic living history site dedicated to educating visitors about the world of an ordinary farm family living in 18th century southeastern Pennsylvania. Henry Lewis’ Grange Estate was one of the first three European settlers in Haverford Township. Arriving in 1682, he built his estate on 500 acres. Linvilla Orchards is a 300-acre farm dedicated to agriculture, entertainment and education. Take a hayride thru our fields and orchards; climb aboard our passenger train “The Playland Express;” experience a ride on a real pony; let “Face Painting by Stacey” transform you into a princess or Spiderman, visit with the farm animals and play in our all new Playland Playground. Nathaniel Newlin Grist Mill and Milling community is an active 1704 water-wheel powered grist mill, 1739 miller's home, log cabin, and active forge.
